2019 term 2: week 5: Operating Systems

We have been working with PC components, and current/emerging hardware, and are about finished with our summative assessments.  Students designed PC builds for an IT manager for a company, and also a personal build of their choice.  We have seen a wide variety of computer builds that serve many purposes.  Next week, we will start learning about software and operating systems.  We will begin focusing on Windows 10, then will eventually move on to Linux.

2019 term 2: week 4: PC Building

I hope everybody has been having a good week!  I'm glad I got to talk to a lot of you last night at parent-teacher conferences!  Next week students will finish learning about PC components.  We are taking apart computers, identifying the components and explaining their function, then reassembling the machines.  We will then be designing PC builds for a variety of situations.  The PC build design will be our summative assessment.  Students will design a compatible build for a business CEO, then design a personal build of their choice.

2019 term 2: week 3: How computers work

2019 term 2: week 2: History of tech

Students in IT Fundamentals have been working on their research of job opportunities in technology for each of the major career clusters.  Next week, we will start learning about hardware with a brief history of technology and computers.  Students will see the impact of early machines, and how early designs still impact the designs of what we use today.

2019 term 2: week 1: Welcome to IT Fundamentals

Welcome to IT Fundamentals! Students will spend some time this week getting to know each other and our interests in computer science.  This is a course that teaches about hardware, operating systems, networking, troubleshooting, and introduction to computer science.  We will also start learning about the history of computers and evolution of technology.  We have a lot of exciting things going on in this course this term with experience getting career/college/life ready in the exciting field of computer science!  See you all Monday!

2019 term 1: week 9: More Coding

IT Fundamentals has one week left for the term!  Students have been learning about coding.  We have discussed the development cycle, and are working on creating applications for mobile devices.  A lot of great ideas for apps have been created so far!  Once we are done with mobile device app programming, we will be learning how to code web pages.  It has been a great term, and we have a lot of students who are ready for programming 1 and web design 1 classes!

2019 term 1: week 8: Coding

IT Fundamentals class is finishing up their comprehensive troubleshooting resource, then will be ready for our last section next week.  We will be working on some coding.  Students will learn 2 areas of coding.  The first will be how to create an app for an Android mobile device.  The second will be how to code for the world wide web.

2019 term 1: week 7: networks and troubleshooting

IT fundamental class has finished learning about networks and is working on the summative assessment.  The summative has students creating a network plan for a small business.  Next week, students will be combining understanding from all units as they create a comprehensive troubleshooting guide.

2019 term 1: week 6: networks

Students have finished with their section over operating systems.  Friday students turned in their comparative analysis of Linux and Windows, and are ready for the next section.  Next week we will start learning about networks.

2019 term 1: week 5: Linux

Hey!  We have finished our section on Windows 10.  Now we are going to be learning how to use operating system called Linux.  We will be using Raspberry Pi computers for this.  We are also discussing pros and cons of Proprietary and Open Source software.  Parent-Teacher-Conferences are next week also!!

2019 term 1: week 4: Operating Systems Microsoft Windows

Next week we will continue learning how to use operating systems.  Students should be able to come away from class with great productivity and management skills with Windows 10, and understanding of how to use the command prompt, and pros and cons of proprietary software.  We will then move on to the open-source options with Raspbian (a build of Linux that runs on the Raspberry Pi computers).

2019 term 1: week 3:hardware assessment and Operating Systems

We had a great week in IT Fundamentals.  Students learned about computer components, they took apart, and assembled computers, and learn how everything fits together and works.  Students are now starting their summative assessment.  Students are creating a presentation for 2 computer builds.  They are designing a computer for the IT manager of a company, and a PC build of their personal choice.  Students are making sure all of the components are compatible with each other and will be able to explain why they chose the various components.  Students will also have a cost analysis of their computer builds.  Once we finish our assessments, we will then start learning about operating systems.

2019 Term 1: Week 2: Hardware

IT fundamentals students have learned about careers in computer science and IT.  We then started talking about the history of computers.  Students will be learning about binary code, modern computers, and then PC components.  We are working towards our assessment, which will involve putting together a PC, and designing a variety of PC builds.  This should make for a fun week!

2019 term 1: week 1: IT Careers

Welcome back bulldogs!  I'm excited to be back and ready to teach you all about Information Technology and Computer Science fundamentals.  This week we will be getting to know each other, getting acclimated to our expectations and topics for the term.  We will also be talking a great deal about our Information Technology and Web Development career pathways that this course is an introductory to.  Our first assignment we will be working on is discovering all the career opportunities that lie in the six career clusters.  I'm looking forward to seeing you all soon!
